the month of July

Wow, I can't believe next week is the last week of July. The month flew by like a flash in the night. All is well in the Johnson household. It's been hotter than blazes here in NM with temps near 100 deg F for several days in a row. We are now entering a "cool spell" with more clouds, rain and temps in the 90's deg F. So our afternoons have been spent indoors with the AC cranked and we look to the morning or evenings to get outdoors. Emma and I are continuing our walks in the morning after I drop Sarah off. On occasion I run with her in the car seat and BOB stroller...OK, I'll admit it's more like a quick jog. But it gets the heart and blood pumpin plus allows me time to soak in some rays before the day gets too hot.

Emma is doing great and seems to have chunked up quit a bit these past two weeks. I've also started the weaning process. I nursed Sarah until 9 months but decided Emma will be totally cut off by 5-6 months. I have no good reason other than I'm being selfish and want my body back including my tatas. Emma doesn't seem to mind the bottle with formula nor the pacifier which is great and a total departure from our experience with Sarah. Emma is also cooing more with the occasional giggle. We are practicing sitting up in the Bumbo chair and on our laps to give her opportunity to control her head. She is getting better with each passing day. She smiles and giggles at Sarah who is a spaz most of the time. But good entertainment for the baby and us as well. Emma's cooing volume increases when Kirk comes home as if she is competing with Sarah for his attention. We will be moving her out of the bassinet in our room into her room and crib hopefully this weekend. The new rocker recliner I ordered arrives tomorrow allowing us to put final touches to the room. We moved Sarah out of what will be Emma's room and into the guest room. It's her big girl room and she is sleeping in the queen size bed like a champ.

Sarah is doing well and growing a bunch lately. Kirk says she looks like a pup who is trying to grow into her rather large paws at the moment (in proportion to her arms). She also has what my brother calls Flinstone feet. She is still enjoying 'school' and her friends. Her last day of ballet/tap class is next Thursday for the summer with a small class performance and she will return in the fall at the end of August. She was excited at first about taking the dance class but seems to be losing interest. I still force her to go because it's good for balance and coordination. Plus she is too cute in that tutu.

Kirk is busy at work like a one legged man in a you know what contest. He still manages to go fishing on the weekends and allow me time to run on the weekend mornings. I look forward to my 45 minutes on those days. It's me alone on the road with my iPod turned up with music that doesn't involve the Wiggles, twinkle star or Tinker Bell.

Here are a few pictures from our adventures in July:

Emma loves this toy...easy to practice her grip and pulling it to her mouth.

Lizards galore lately! This one was looking for lunch on our back patio.

Pissed off to say the least...swimming at the Durango Rec Center.

Slighly listing to the right but getting better with practice. Found the thumb!
Sister love.
Hanging out in Sarah's big girl room.
Tummy time and saying hi to the monkey.
What's up?

4th of July Fun

We were able to make it to Denver to visit my parents for the 4th of July weekend. This was their first time seeing Emma since my mom was diagnosed with an illness at the time of Emma's birth. We flew the Cessna which was great - a short 2 hr flight which is a heck of alot better than an 8 hr car ride. Both girls did great on the way to Denver enjoying "Nemo" and "Beauty and the Beast" (Sarah) or taking her morning nap (Emma). The return flight home wasn't as good with more bumps and a not so very happy Emma when we had to climb up to 13,000ft a couple of times.

We really enjoyed visiting with my parents at the house. We made it to the Denver Zoo which was nice but it was warm and humid. The girls didn't last too long so we were out by the lunch hour and missed a view exhibits. We also made it to retail therapy at Flatirons Crossing (my favorite mall) and again pushed the girls to the limit. We enjoyed fireworks on the 3rd with displays that we could see from my parents' deck. We missed displays on the 4th due to a crazy wind, rain, thunder and lightening storm throughout the Denver area.

Sarah had a great time harassing the three kittens and Jessie the dog just about all day long. The female kitten would let Sarah pick her up so that was pretty fun for her...the kittens are residents at the house but are workers in that they are suppose to be keeping the field mice population low. But I guess all they do is get into mischief. And it was a treat for Sarah to enjoy cats since I'm allergic so we will never own one.

We look forward to visiting my folks again hopefully this fall in Denver if not sooner in Farmington.

Here are a few pictures from the weekend:

Emma's first flight in the Cessna. She rode in first class with the Bose headsets - nothing but the best!

The Colorado School of Mines 'M' from the air.

Sarah enjoying "Nemo" and "Beauty and the Best" on the portable DVD player.

Emma loves Woody the Cowboy.Grandpa Jerry and Emma before she became uncorked.

Sarah helping Grandma Ann with the 4th of July strawberry pie (and it was heavenly!).

Sarah wanted to sweep the kitchen floor "just like the princesses do on the show mama". No joke, Sarah is Snow White in the making. First making a pie with Grandma and then sweeping the floors.

Bubble fun!

Emma and Grandma Ann having an afternoon chat.

Denver Zoo - Grandma Ann bought Sarah a giraffe just like the ones at the zoo.

Showing some Alaska Love.

Whoops, my bad!

I'm excited because I found a way to work out with help. I'm taking private pilates sessions with a very nice instructor at Elements Pilates. She is so sweet because I'm able to bring Emma along with me to the sessions. I just lay her down on her baby Einstein play mat and we work out for an hour. If Emma gets fussy, either Emily (the instructor) or I try to make her happy. I've gone to 3 sessions so far and love it. That in combination with almost daily walks or runs in the morning are helping with the fight I'm having with my post baby body.

But I managed to back into a parked brand new truck last week as I was backing out of the parking lot at the Pilates studio. The Pilot took most of it on the bumper and the truck will need to be buffed out and repainted on the driver side rear quarter panel. Nice. The owner of the truck was super nice and we both have policies at the same State Farm office. So after all those years of working on the North Slope where they ingrained into our pea brains the importance of backing up safety, I screw up. Dang! At least Emma and I were OK.
So it's off to the body shop tomorrow to begin the repair process. Happy, happy, joy, joy!

2 months

Emma had her 2 month check up last week. She will be 10 weeks on Wednesday! Her stats were:
12 lbs 5 oz - 90th percentile for weight
23.5" - 90th percentile for height

Emma and Sarah were just about the same in both weight and height at this age. Her checkup went well and we will be back late August for her 4 month visit.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun

Here are a few pictures of the girls taken recently. We are doing well. Enjoy!

Tandem bathing is the way to go with the Johnson girls. It's also better when you wear swim goggles in the bath.

Emma post bath in her bunny towel relaxing.

Sarah's first day in ballet/tap class for 3-4 year olds. She was over the top excited and LOVES her "tap tap shoes".

It's been in the high 90 deg F temps for a week. Thank goodness for AC. We bought Sarah a new sprinkler ball to help cool off in the heat.

5 week Update

Thought I would post an update from the Johnson clan. All is well...relatively. Define well in a house with a 3 year old, a 5 week old who changes daily and two type A engineer parents. Don't get me wrong, we are doing well but there are days when even a small glass of wine just doesn't seem to help. It's alot of work.

I had my 5-week post op check up early this week. I'm cleared to return to life. As my doctor was checking my incision, she noticed my ab (that lovely ponch of a belly) and said that was my next battle. Being that I was "thin before my pregnancy" (her words folks) and that I just had my second baby, me and my ab would have to go toe to toe to make the ab turn back into what it's formally known as abs. Plural...with lines and definition. ha! So then I go into the excuse of well, it's my uterus right? It's still shrinking right? Wrong! The uterus is also back to it's old self again. Excellent. Oh and then I explained that I may have diastasis and that we have a friend who also had it but seems to be managing it with physical therapy. My doc again said because I had it the first time and now with the second baby, it's gotten worse. And she doesn't know of an exercise that will make it go away, just may help a wee bit. The only way it can go away is with plastic surgery. And another friend who had her second baby the week after I had Emma had her doctor say the same thing. Awesome. I never thought I would be a candidate for plastic surgery. I always thought natural was beautiful and still do....I think. But man ol' man, after all is said and done, getting some work done to help the abs, extra wobbly bits around the sides and tatas may not be a bad thing after all. We shall see what the body looks like after getting on the exercise bandwagon and after breastfeeding. What is sad is I took a long walk the other morning with Emma and I was sore the next day. Sore in all the right places but sore. It's hard starting all over again.

Kirk is doing well and preparing for his escape next week. He will be traveling to Calgary on company business and I think come Tuesday morning, he will feel like he has been freed from a life sentence in prison. Flying alone, able to read whatever you want on the plane uninterrupted, sleeping in a peaceful posh hotel, eating good food, having yummy drink, etc. I told him he better enjoy every last minute of it even those long boring meetings.

Sarah is doing great at school. She moves into the next room in June which will be nice. She is also doing well at home being a good big sister. But she is also doing well at being 3 and competing for attention. She is become an expert at challenging us when it comes to listening skills and being sassy. I joke that the patience fairy manages to pass us by on a daily basis because by 8pm, I'm plum out of it. I've found that I have to breathe, look the other way or just walk away sometimes so I don't go nutso crazy. But we love her a bunch and she continues to make us laugh on a daily basis.

Emma is doing great and changing a bunch. She has more alert periods and is starting to make eye contact. It may be wishful thinking but I'm also convinced I got a smile from her the other day. She is very calm during baths which is great and enjoys her baby massages after the bath when we do the lotion rub down. She is still nursing and sleeping well. Plus she continues to chunk up. The rolls on her legs and arms are beefing up which is the cutest. She is starting to get over the swaddle. I can swaddle her before laying her down but she manages to get those little arms out before she wakes up. She has also found her hand so in time she will soon have that thumb in her mouth I'm sure.

I took these pictures this morning of the girls. Sarah is showing off her new dress before school and Emma is sacked out in the papasan.

Adjusting to our new life

All is well so far in the Johnson house with adjusting to life with a newborn. I can't believe it's been nearly 3 weeks since Emma arrived!

I was released from the hospital four days after Emma's birth. I forgot how hard the first few days post surgery were but am glad that I'm recovering well. Kirk took the first off from work and that was nice. We kept Sarah home from daycare as well so we could have time together as a family. By the end of the week, we were all getting antsy. We were thankful and felt blessed that a local moms group that I'm part of delivered meals for the majority of the first two weeks we were home. Sarah returned to daycare last week with some reluctance. But she did well showing off her new baby sister to her classmates and wearing her 'big sister' shirts with pride. Kirk has been back to work in full force busy as ever. And I'm home with Emma trying to keep the house from total disaster while bonding with the new little one and catching up on sleep. Emma is a sleeper...at least much more than Sarah was at this age. She does well with feeding and is on a 3-4 hour schedule. It seems during the day she can stretch to 4 hours between feedings but at night 3 hours is her max. So it's down for bed around 10:30pm-11:00pm and up again around 2-3am followed by a wake up call at 6-7am. She sleeps well in the bassinet which is something Sarah did not do well until 2 months or so. Emma is chunking up with each passing day so I look forward to her 2 month visit in June.

Sarah is doing really well with being a big sister. She takes pride in calling herself 'big sister'. She is still practicing being gentle with the baby when it comes to rubbing and kissing. We call her our bull in the china closet. She is a tad bit jealous when it comes to sharing. Sharing things like mommy's time and the jogging stroller seem to be the latest battles. Plus I have to play "Let's Make a Deal" just about every morning before daycare in order to make the thought of daycare somewhat appealing. So far the deals have been fairly benign like letting her watch a certain show after school or arriving at daycare with a lollipop.

I'm doing well with recovery. I know what to expect this time plus the increase of sleep has helped. I still get sore come nigh time and require a pain pill but otherwise I'm hanging in there watching the belly slowly shrink. I look forward to my 6 week visit with the doctor in a couple of weeks.

We will post more pictures as Kirk has time to do his magic in Photo Shop with the collection of shots taken over the past two weeks.
